In 1994, husband and wife Fernando Lopez and Maria Monterrubio, alongside their children, migrated to the US and opened Guelaguetza restaurant. Their mission was simple: to give the Oaxaqueños of Los Angeles a place that tasted like home.
Three decades later, their children, Fernando, Paulina, and Bricia, keep their legacy alive today. From the moles, chocolate, tlayudas, and chapulines flown in from Oaxaca weekly, to tortillas ground fresh every morning, Oaxaca and its flavors are ingrained deep in who we are, and sharing them has been our life's work.
What started as one family's bet on their own food has become a home for a whole community, and a Oaxacan revolution in Los Angeles.
Guelaguetza is a Zapotec word and a tradition handed down through generations. It means to give and to receive, the way our community comes together at weddings, in celebrations, and in the smallest acts of generosity. We look forward to sharing our Guelaguetza with you.
